Transforming education in Dominica

Having achieved universal primary and secondary education, tuition-free tertiary education, and expanded access to pre-primary education, Dominica is focused on improving the quality and relevance of education.

Sector challenges include high dropout rates in upper secondary education, especially among boys, low learning levels in numeracy and literacy, and inadequate support for students with special learning needs.

The government is working with GPE and other partners to develop, implement and sustain a comprehensive, inclusive and equitable curriculum.

Dominica’s Partnership Compact marks the country’s commitment to transform education with a new curriculum that serves the needs of all students and integrates technology, life skills, technical and vocational education and training, arts and resilience education.

Teachers will be trained in inclusive, gender-sensitive and student-centered teaching and assessment strategies, with a focus on engaging boys and students with special needs.
