Statement by Julia Gillard on the attack on Bacha Khan University in Pakistan

January 20, 2016 - The attack on Bacha Khan University in Charsadda in northwest Pakistan in which reportedly 19 people were killed and 17 injured is an alarming reminder of how education is increasingly becoming a target of violent acts by extremist groups.

The Global Partnership for Education is deeply shocked by the needless and violent death of students and teachers and other university staff. Our thoughts are with all the families and loved ones.

Places of education must be safe places for young people, teachers and other staff to work and learn without fear of being attacked.

The Global Partnership for Education will continue to support the Government of Pakistan to improve school access and ensure learning for all Pakistani children.

The Global Partnership for Education also reaffirms its commitment to the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack.
