Launched ahead of the African Union Commission’s second African Girls Summit on Ending Child Marriage taking place in Accra, Ghana this week, a new report from the World Bank reveals that child marriage are jeopardizing African economies.

Supported by GPE, the report, entitled Educating Girls and Ending Child Marriage: A Priority for Africa, insists on the fact that child marriage will cost African countries tens of billions of dollars in lost earnings and human capital. They also contribute to increase fertility rates and “if they were ended today, lower population growth would lead to higher standards of living, especially for the poorest”, says the report.
