Tunisia: Class Quiz platform offers gamified educational content

This is the 3rd blog in our series showcasing the winners of the African Union ‘Innovating Education in Africa’ program. As part of the GPE Financing Campaign, we hear from young people on the financing and innovations needed to keep education at the center of the COVID recovery, to get more children learning and leave no child behind.

My name is Sabrine Ibrahim from Tunisia. I am 29 years old.

I created Class Quiz to change traditional schooling to ‘gamified’ educational content. It offers a journey of knowledge and practice through a smart platform, providing accessible and quality education for primary students ages 6 to 12.

My ambition is to make education better in Tunisia as well as in Africa as a whole. There is a continuous lack of resources and equipment in schools today. Investing in good quality education using technology becomes essential in order to solve such challenges and provide inclusive education for everyone without leaving anyone behind.

COVID-19 has exacerbated challenges in the Tunisian education system, as well as in many other countries. And we had no ready infrastructure for online education during lockdown. This highlights the urgent need to invest in innovative solutions that are more efficient and flexible and deploy technology to guarantee sustainable access to inclusive quality education for every child, anytime and anywhere.

A new online tool to help children learn during lockdowns

Class Quiz contributes to reducing inequalities by providing a quality education for all including the most vulnerable and deprived students.

The costs of access for vulnerable students are covered by our partners under the umbrella of our common projects (Kiyam project with Zitouna Bank and the digital school project with Orange Foundation).

So far, 10,700 children have benefited from our services and improved their academic results according to their teachers, using performances tracking tools.

Moreover, 1,000 children benefited from the free COVID-19 edition packages, along with many organized live Facebook sessions with psychologists, teachers and partners. Class Quiz is also the best alternative for parents seeking efficiency and quality over price as we offer better adapted learning solutions that are efficient, modern and accessible to everyone including students with learning disabilities.

Moreover, with Orange Foundation and the French Institute, we aim to scale Class Quiz in 13 African and francophone countries. The Tunisian Ministry of Education highly appreciated Class Quiz and it was selected among 481 social enterprises and startups across the Arab world as the best educational mobile app for 2019 in the MADA ALECSO Apps award.

A regional award was also organized by ALECSO “Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science” representing the various educational systems in the Arab region.

The need to support innovations to tackle education challenges

Africa faces multiple challenges in education, but there are many entrepreneurs and startup founders who work hard to find efficient and innovative solutions to address these challenges. What’s missing is sustainable collaborative channels to unify these efforts and bring them to scale.

Governments should establish reliable networks of collaboration between startups and with their own policies and programs. This will strengthen the potential to address challenges, amplify our joint impact, secure the efficient participation of all actors.

It will also set up processes through which all actors work toward the common goal of strengthening Africa’s education through the most innovative ways.

Being a finalist in the AU Innovation Expo and considered as one of the top 10 African EdTech startups in 2020 by the African Union was an exciting journey of success for our team. We are extremely grateful and believe it will prompt more efforts to strengthen quality education in Africa.

For the next 12 months, we aim to conquer the Tunisian market and make Class Quiz the first educational platform purchased by parents and primary education educators in Tunisia.

Our goal is to reach a community 30,000 subscribed customers and consolidate promising new collaborations with our current partners alongside new potential actors and investors to scale our activities in the African market and the Middle East.

I can't think how a quizz would help educate children. A quiz means providing a 'right' answer to a closed question. The implication is that the more information children stuff into their heads (whether understanding it or not), the better the outcome. This sounds like an example of what should NOT be happening, least of all in countries in danger of not turning away from rote learning to adopt enquiry learning. Let me not even query who the targeted 10,000 are, what their access to internet is without the prop of the project, and the sustainability of the project once the donor has gone or the company has sold all its wares....

Class Quiz’s concept is based on several types of activities and interactive exercises apart from the closed question type. In fact, our app was highly recommended due to its exercises that simulate the sense of criticism, reflection and creativity of the children. We kindly invite you to download the application and test it to fully explore the diversity of our exercises and our highly engaging user experience.

Moreover, to make sure we are covering the needs of a maximum number of children, our operations are based on two models: one designed for connected kids and the 2nd is dedicated to children and rural schools deprived from reliable access to the internet. In fact, we collaborate with various partners to cover these particular needs by developing offline solutions and platforms.

Thus, these two models make Class Quiz more sustainable and accessible to all who need it.
