In the College Mixte Joinvil in Port au Prince, Haiti 1st graders learn to read using the Map li nèt ale (I’m reading all the way) program. This innovative project, designed and funded by USAID and the World Bank, is a new approach to teaching reading to children in their native language, in this case creole. This is not only important for the preservation of Haiti’s cultural heritage but it also benefits the students: children who learn in their mother tongue are more likely to enroll and succeed in school. The reading program is part of the larger Education for All project that several donors, including the Global Partnership, finance.
