On July 6 and 7, global leaders gather in Norway for the Oslo Summit on Education for Development.  Their discussions will build on the outcomes of the World Education Forum in Korea and provide input to the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in Addis Ababa as well as the United Nations General Assembly later in September.

Hosted by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the summit wants to mobilize political commitment to reach the 58 million children who are still not in primary school, and improve the quality of learning for children in school.

“The Summit has been initiated to help reverse the negative trend in international support for education and to contribute to enhanced domestic resource mobilization. Innovative partnerships and results-oriented, well-coordinated development aid are crucial as we approach the deadline for the Millennium Development Goals and the adoption of the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.” – says the Oslo Summit website

The two-day summit begins on July 6th with “Partnering for Education”, a side event organized by leading Norwegian and global NGOs and Telenor Group, followed by the High Level Summit on July 7th.

Participants include UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai, UN Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown, Rwandan President Paul Kagame, and many others. Julia Gillard, board chair of the Global Partnership for Education, will participate in a panel on “Equity in Education” on Monday, as well as in a discussion on “Investment in Education” on Tuesday.
