Japan and GPE
Japan has been a longstanding partner of GPE, having joined the partnership in 2008. To date, Japan has contributed over US$55 million to GPE, making it the 18th largest donor to the fund.
Japan serves as a Coordinating Agency in multiple GPE partner countries, namely Mongolia, Pakistan, and Papua New Guinea. At the G7 Hiroshima Summit, under Japan’s leadership, G7 leaders pledged to promote inclusive and equitable quality education.
Consequently, ongoing support for the GPE was confirmed in the Leaders' Communiqué. Following the summit, Japan updated its White Paper on Official Development Assistance (ODA), designating "quality education for all" as a key pillar.
As the implementation organization for Japan’s ODA programs, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has collaborated with GPE in seven countries.
To implement them, JICA has contributed $99 million in total and has utilized around $33 million from the GPE multiplier, making it the sixth largest contributor among education support organizations participating in this scheme.
