Washington, January 25, 2018 - Canada will double its annual contribution to GPE to CAD180 million for the three year period 2018 to 2020.
The announcement was made earlier today by Canada’s Prime Minister Trudeau at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
“What the Global Partnership for Education is doing is so meaningful,” Prime Minister Trudeau said at a panel discussion where he made the announcement. “This is to empower young women and girls with education which is a pathway to success.”
The panel also included Malala Yousafzai, who recently called on world leaders to support the Global Partnership for Education and #FundEducation.
“We sincerely thank the Prime Minister for his leadership and the government of Canada for its new commitment of CAD 180 million for 2018 to 2020, a doubling of its annual contribution to the Global Partnership for Education,” said Alice Albright, Chief Executive Officer, Global Partnership for Education. “We look forward to continuing to work with Canada and other governments, to ensure that GPE reaches a funding level of at least US$2 billion per year by 2020. Canada’s leadership of the G7 this year is a great opportunity for to take the bold steps necessary to ensure that girls and boys everywhere have the opportunity of a quality education.”
The Global Partnership for Education seeks to raise US$3.1 billion for 2018 to 2020 to support up to 89 developing countries and drive improved quality and access to education for 870 million children and youth. The upcoming Global Partnership for Education Financing Conference on February 1-2 in Dakar will kick start the 3-year financing process.
Canada has been a strong partner of GPE since 2007, shares a seat on the GPE Board of Directors with the United Kingdom and is a member of the Board’s Finance and Risk Committee. Global Affairs Canada also has worked closely with GPE on the partnership’s gender equality strategy and implementation plan.
