In the current international development landscape, education is foundational as an end in itself and a driving force for progress in other key sectors, including climate, health, employment and the achievement of all Sustainable Development Goals.

Progress in education globally faces profound urgency and crisis, most recently illustrated by new figures on the annual financing gap of close to US$100 billion for low- and lower-middle-income countries to meet their national SDG 4 education targets, and exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Thus addressing challenges in the multilateral education financing system is critical.

This work builds on the Paris Declaration, which emphasized the importance of multilateral cooperation and multi-stakeholder engagement in advocating for education as a key response to recovery and transformation. By positioning education as a global good, the Paris Declaration highlights the need for collective action and investment to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background or circumstances, can benefit from quality education and contribute to sustainable development.

Strengthening the multilateral education financing system is a crucial step in realizing this vision and addressing the numerous challenges faced by the education sector today, building on the 2022 Transforming Education Summit and preparing for the 2024 Summit of the Future.

This event will take place during the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact, hosted by the SDG r;4 Education 2030 High Level Steering Committee, and co-organized with GPE and UNESCO.

The event will feature several Heads of State or government from GPE partner countries, as well as leaders from major funders, multilateral agencies and international financing pioneers, who will talk about developing a responsive and fit-for-purpose multilateral education financing system as a catalyst for Agenda 2030.
