This year, one of the topics the Numeracy for Development Community of Practice will be exploring the role of language in mathematics.
The first webinar for the year will be held Wednesday, February 22nd at 11:15 am EST in celebration of International Mother Language Day. The webinar will be co-hosted by the Global Reading Network and will be a panel discussion titled "Towards Equitable and Inclusive Quality Education: The Role of Language in Mathematics Literacy - Insights from sub-Saharan Africa.
The panel discussion will feature a conversation with Professors Mamokgethi Phakeng, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Internationalization and Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Cape Town, and Mercy Kazima, Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at the University of Malawi, and will be moderated by Dr. Anthony Essien, Head of Mathematics Education Department at the University of Witwatersrand.
The webinar will explore current classroom practices in early grades math teaching and learning in sub-Saharan Africa, review key challenges in multilingual mathematics classrooms and discuss approaches to address these challenges.
