"Education is not only a basic human right. It is fundamental to ending extreme poverty"
This is what World Bank President Jim Yong Kim said at the opening of the Learning for All Symposium in Washington, DC yesterday. Kim expressed strong support for the Second Replenishment of the Global Partnership for Education, asking ministers of finance from donor and developing countries to fund education as a way to fight poverty.
The event was attended by United Nations Secretariat General Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Special Envoy for Global Education Gordon Brown, GPE CEO Alice Albright, USAID Administrator Rajiv Shah, and a panel of ministers of finance from Bangladesh, Malawi, Norway, Papua New Guinea and Senegal.
