Germany also supports the BACKUP Initiative – Education in Africa  which provides support to governments and civil society partners to avoid bottlenecks during the application for and use of GPE education grants. BACKUP Education has supported more than 60 activities in more than 20 countries and regions.  The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) has also commissioned with a new Sector Programme Numeracy dedicated to promoting numeracy in pre-school and early grades and hosts monthly numeracy webinars.
