Can Students in South Sudan Still Leave Their Shoes Outside the School?

When GPE Chief Executive Officer Alice Albright visited Gudele West Basic School, outside Juba, in May 2013, she discovered that students and teacher left their shoes in a neat circle at the entrance of their classroom to ensure they kept it clean. South Sudan is now experiencing renewed violence and conflict, and this makes us wonder: are children still able to leave their shoes outside and attend school in South Sudan?  Children in fragile and conflict-affected countries are 3 times as likely to be out of primary school as in other low income countries. (World Development Report 2011).
